Emi has been playing piano for thirteen years and has been an avid fan of music her whole life. Piano has been a huge part of her life for so long, and she is excited to continue her piano studies next year at Oberlin College.

Asijah Grady has been playing the piano for a total of 7 years, beginning in 5th grade, starting with an independent tutor, then began taking piano classes at DSA since she was in 7th grade. Hours on hours of practice and her passion for the piano have made her into the pianist she is today. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro this fall and will major in engineering.
Tatiana Burrus has been playing piano for about six years now. She loves playing and absolutely adores music! Despite Tatiana's love for music, she also enjoys performing/acting in plays and has been involved in many DSA theatre productions throughout her middle and high school years. She has always had an amazing time in piano class. Shout-out to Mr. Davis who encourages Tatiana to pursue her dreams! He also has been instrumental in teaching her to become the pianist she is today. Tatiana will be pursuing theatre at East Carolina University in the Fall to begin earning her B.F.A in Professional Acting!

My name is Deja Taylor. I started playing piano in the 8th grade. The piano experience is and was quite beautiful. I've been playing piano for 4 years. I plan on continuing my piano career at Campbell University. I will also be starting a career in the pharmaceutical business. Thank you Mr. Davis for giving me the opportunity to have these skills.
Peyton Marsalis has been studying classical piano for 13 years. Music has been a part of her life since she was born. She has developed an eclectic taste in music, exploring songs from all around the world. She is an avid singer, having participated in chorus throughout elementary school up until her sophomore year at DSA. Peyton is also very interested in the production side of music and writing lyrics.. She will be attending Oberlin College in the Fall.
Jenna Broadnax started learning piano from a teacher when she was eight years old, but before that she was taught the basics by her grandmother. After taking a break from private lessons for a few years she started playing piano at DSA in 10th grade. She has also played the violin in the orchestra since 6th grade and dances in and outside of school. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro this fall with a major in dance.
I've attended DSA since the sixth grade. I've been taking piano ever since the 7th grade. Some other organizations I've been in at DSA are National Honors Society, Chorus, HOMIES, and Prom Committee. I have enjoyed my time here taking piano at DSA! I've grown so much musically, and it has really impacted me in several ways. I’m excited to announce that next year I will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro majoring in Nursing, and double minoring in Spanish and Music Therapy.
Darren Laville has played piano since 8th grade and has been apart of the Jazz Artistry Combo for 3 years. He will be attending college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill.
Katherine Davis, the daughter of Mr. Davis has experienced the joy of music since birth. In fact, since Kindergarten, her father has taught music in the same schools she has attended all the way from California to the beautiful South! Katherine enjoys playing the piano as well as singing. She believes that music has helped her grow throughout her life. Katherine will be attending UNC Greensboro in the Fall and will be majoring in psychology.
Cherish Akasha Gerald has been playing piano since the 8th grade. She knew she wanted to play piano because her grandmother and grandfather bought her a piano. People would tell her all the time to play because of her beautiful long fingers. Little did she know it would help her so much emotionally. It helped her through a lot. Thank you Mr. Davis.
Camryn Hamlett has been playing piano since she was about 8 eight years old. While at DSA she has been a member of Chamber Ensemble, Gospel Club and the H.O.M.I.E.S Club. She will be attending North Carolina A&T State University with a concentration in Journalism and Mass Communications. She promises to continue playing piano in college.
Jesse Tymas has been a piano student at DSA for three and a half years, starting halfway through his freshman year. Jesse enjoys working on ambitious and oftentimes unconventional piano pieces. He is also fond of classical composers such as Hanon.
Niall Fulghum has been playing piano at DSA since 7th grade. Although he started playing classically, for the past few years Niall has worked hard to develop his jazz playing. In addition to playing solo, Niall plays piano/keyboard in DSA Jazz Artistry.
Evelin Lazaro has been playing piano since the eighth grade. She has enjoyed playing and learning piano at DSA. She believes music has influenced her life positively. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall 2019. She will be majoring in public health and minoring in mathematics.
Walker Garrett has been playing piano for almost five years and has enjoyed every moment. He plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill next year and will continue to pursue music while there, whether that be taking classes for fun or simply experimenting during his free time.
Kent Anagor has been playing piano since the 9th grade and as a senior, began taking piano class taught by Mr. Davis at DSA. He also has been playing guitar at DSA since the 7th grade and has excelled to be one of the top guitarists in his class. Kent plans to attend UNC Greensboro this fall and major in computer science with the hope of working in the cyber security field.
Music has always been part of Zane’s daily life. She is known for always singing and her beautiful smile. She has been playing piano since the seventh grade here at DSA. Along with being a member of the DSA chorus for 4 year, she was also one of the first members of H.O.M.I.E.S, a club organized to make our exceptional kids at DSA feel welcomed and apart of our community. She was also a varsity cheerleader for the school basketball team. Zane’ will be attending Durham Technical College in the spring to study education for K-5, and will later transfer to her dream school North Carolina Agricultural and Technical college after two years.
I wish to thank these students for all they have done as a part of DSA’s musical community over the years. We also want to thank the parents and families who have supported their musical endeavors and assisted them in their studies. Lastly, we are very lucky and grateful to have the support of Mr. Hawks, the DSA administration, and our community here in Durham. We wish these fine students the very best as they pursue their futures.
